The graphic illustration appeared within a text report alongside pictures and captions of on a double page newspaper spread on pages 2-3 of the INDEPENDENT On SUNDAY.
The pages consisted of 9 columns which featured one contents column to the left and a two column related article comparing the difference in power between the earthquakes in Chile and Haiti.
The centre article in which the graphic features, consists of 6 columns. The graphic is set to the right of centre and text is set around the graphic at the edge of the third column.
As I read the article, the graphic clearly gave me a summary of the effects and after-effects that the earthquake and tsunami, without having to read all of the facts in the article. The top level of the article used a series of 4 picture frames and 1 caption block.
Each photograph was of a different size and format, but inserted into the page in a set proportional layout. Continue reading
